Cynthia Schloss Blake aka Jamaica's Songbird is the artist of the day (07/06/2026). Cynthia Schloss, born in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica on April 12, 1948, remains one of the most refined and emotionally expressive voices to ever emerge from the Jamaican music landscape. Raised in a close-knit Kingston environment as the third of six children, she was shaped by the cultural depth and resilience of Trench Town and later educated at Trench Town Elementary School before continuing at Ardenne High School, where her natural vocal ability quietly began to stand out. Her rise into music took a defining turn in 1971, when she entered and won the Merritone Amateur Talent Exposure competition with a heartfelt rendition of “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” That moment opened the gate into Jamaica’s professional music world and placed her on a path guided by one of the most important musical families in Jamaican sound system history—the Merritone system, led by Winston “Merritone” Blake. Winston would later become her husband and lifelong creative partner, and it was through him that Cynthia Schloss’s recording identity was carefully shaped and refined. Within the Jamaican and diaspora reggae landscape, Cynthia Schloss became known for her unique place in lovers rock reggae. Her voice carried a gentle emotional clarity that resonated deeply in hotel circuits, stage shows, and diaspora communities across Jamaica and the United Kingdom, where lovers rock found a strong and loyal audience. At the heart of her recorded sound was her deep creative connection with producer and mentor Winston “Merritone” Blake, who not only supported her career but also directed much of her studio output through the Merritone label and sound system family. His production approach gave her music its warm, polished, and emotionally intimate character, making her recordings instantly recognizable. Beyond Merritone, Cynthia Schloss’s voice existed within a wider production network of Jamaican and diaspora studio brilliance. She worked within or alongside the influence of producers such as Clive Hunt, whose arrangements contributed to the evolving reggae soundscape; Bunny “Striker” Lee, one of Jamaica’s most prolific producers whose studio ecosystem defined an era; and Lloyd Campbell of Irie Productions, who played a role in the lovers rock movement in the diaspora. Her recordings also existed within the broader studio environments shaped by Joe Gibbs studio musicians, the engineering innovations associated with King Tubby’s studio engineers, and the UK-based reggae production world including Wackies in New York, led by Brad Osbourne, which supported many lovers rock-style artists of her time. Her sound was further enriched by Jamaica’s elite session musicians. Across different recordings and performances, she was connected to the rhythmic foundations laid by Sly & Robbie (Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare), the influential studio band The Revolutionaries, and the versatile musicians of Skin, Flesh & Bones, along with the wider Merritone house musicians who supported live performances and studio sessions under the Merritone production family. Cynthia Schloss’s discography reflects her emotional depth and stylistic consistency. Her albums include Ready and Waiting (1976), Country Reggae, Reggae Country (1985), A Reggae Experience (1989), and This Is Love (1993). Across these works, she delivered unforgettable interpretations of love, longing, and emotional reflection. Songs such as “Surround Me With Love,” “As If I Didn’t Know,” “You Look Like Love,” “Love Me Forever,” “Oh What a Smile Can Do,” “Am I Losing You,” “Paper Roses,” “Sha-La-La” “Why,” “The Wonder of You,” “Send Me the Pillow,” and “Miracles” cemented her reputation as a defining voice in lovers rock reggae. Cynthia Schloss brought a softness into reggae that did not weaken the genre but expanded its emotional reach.Cynthia Schloss on February 29 1999. Thank you Cynthia and continue resting in peace.
