Humans have been stacking stones since thousands of years. Historically people did it as practical purposes such as marking trails, navigation, or serving as monuments and burial sites .

“Stone stacking” is generally not allowed in national parks because it can damage fragile habitats, disturb wildlife living under rocks, and create erosion by moving soil and stones around. It can also confuse hikers if people mistake unofficial stacks for real trail markers, which is why parks prefer visitors to leave rocks where they are. In some parks, it’s also treated as vandalism or resource damage, especially when visitors alter or remove official cairns used for navigation. The basic rule is Leave No Trace: enjoy the landscape, but don’t leave behind structures or disturb natural features.

If you're out in nature and you lift up rocks you'll almost always find things living under them. Lots of little bugs and creatures make homes under rocks. This is more important than any photo opportunity.

DO NOT DO THIS, in a lot of cases on remote trails these rock structures are often used as mile markers or a as a system to find your way back
