A federal jury in Detroit has awarded televangelist Bishop George Bloomer $62.2 million in a racial discrimination lawsuit against The Word Network and its owner, Kevin Adell, after a five-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The case, Bloomer v. The Word Network Operating Company, Inc., et al. (No. 2:22-cv-12433), centered on a series of text messages Adell sent Bloomer in September 2019. On September 4, 2019, Adell texted Bloomer a meme taken from a blog post titled “Black Gospel Network PIMP Kevin Adell,” which depicted Adell as a pimp surrounded by four Black preachers, including Bloomer. When Bloomer replied that the image was “not funny” and had “a racist connotation,” Adell responded “Lol.” Over the following two weeks, Adell sent Bloomer a photo of a white man with his face scribbled out in black, repeatedly referred to Bloomer as “Tattoo” (the character from Fantasy Island), re-sent a close-up of Bloomer’s face from the meme, and replied to Bloomer’s objections with “So sensitive” and “WTF.” After Bloomer relayed complaints that the network was being run “like a plantation,” Adell texted that he would “look tomorrow on how much time u are on Network.” Adell later testified that he intended to pull Bloomer’s airtime and described the threat as “the whip.” Bloomer left the network on September 16, 2019. Two days later, Adell texted, “Please no longer communicate with me I am now blocking your phone.” The Word Network, launched by Adell in 2000, describes itself as the largest African American religious broadcasting network in the world. Bloomer, a pastor and author from Durham, North Carolina, hosted the program “Rejoice in the Word” on the network from 2011 to 2019 under a handshake agreement, with no written contract and no salary. Bloomer sued in October 2022 under 42 U.S.C. § 1981, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which prohibits racial discrimination in the making and enforcement of contracts and, unlike Title VII, has no cap on damages. In June 2025, U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds denied most of the defendants’ motion for summary judgment, finding that Adell’s conduct was “direct evidence of racial animus” and that his reference to “the whip” was “a clear reference to how masters disciplined slaves.” The jury found that The Word Network and its affiliated church operated as a single integrated employer, and that both the network and Adell personally discriminated against Bloomer because of his race, subjected him to a hostile work environment, and retaliated against him. The award breaks down as $9.2 million in compensatory damages, $51 million in punitive damages, and $2 million for unjust enrichment, based on the jury’s finding that the network benefited from Bloomer’s services without paying their reasonable value. Twenty-six days after Bloomer filed suit, Adell’s church filed a separate fraud lawsuit against Bloomer seeking the return of money he earned at the network. Judge Edmunds dismissed that case in June 2025 as barred by Michigan’s six-year statute of limitations. Nine days after the verdict, Adell filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, triggering an automatic stay on collection efforts.
