The Norwegian government removed or significantly reduced many taxes and fees on electric cars, while EV owners also benefited from free or cheaper charging in many places, reduced tolls, lower parking costs and, in some cases, free ferry crossings. At the same time, taxes and fees on fossil-fuel cars in Norway are extremely high. So there are many different factors behind Norway’s transition to electric vehicles, but it clearly demonstrates how strongly price can influence consumer behaviour on an entire national scale. When the government makes one technology significantly cheaper to buy and use while making the alternative considerably more expensive, it can fundamentally change an entire Market

And in Norway the electric cars go to the scrapyard after 6.9 years instead of 18 years like a normal car 👏

I see my fellow Norwegians in the comments enjoying the usual argument that Norway became an EV utopia because of free charging, free parking, no taxes, access to bus lanes, etc. And yes, that WAS a major reason for the massive EV boom in Norway. But it’s 2026. A lot of those incentives are either gone or heavily reduced. EVs can no longer use bus lanes in many places, parking and charging are no longer generally free, and most new EVs now face 25% VAT. For comparison, new fossil-fuel cars also face 25% VAT, so when it comes to VAT, the playing field is basically equal. And yet Norwegians are still overwhelmingly choosing EVs. Not because modern ICE cars are necessarily bad, but because an entire population has become accustomed to a cheaper and more efficient way of getting around. The biggest difference now is the running cost, especially fuel vs electricity, as well as the various road taxes and fees.

Norway subsidized EV cars. You could get a 500 hp EV car for 60 000, while a corvette costs 250 000 because of taxes. I would know, Im a norwegian and I had a tesla.
