yes but the bottom line is we've already paid tax on the money we've invested so even if you call it a charge, it's still a tax on tax no?

I'd rather not get paid any interest then give labour 22% of it

But stocks and shares are risk, British are risk averse.
The stock market is going to crash, why risk your wealth on tech inflated stocks and shares?

It seems like a lot of people are still confused in the comments.
You can keep your cash ISAs and you can have more that 12k in them. You just can't contribute more than 12k per tax year. if you're not saving more than 12k a year you're fine.
With the stocks and shares ISA from what I understand it's a tax on ONLY the interests accrued by cash holdings. NOT on any cash just sitting there. It's not what people are making it out to be.

Tax on top of tax. Not to mention, the money we’ve invested or put in cash isa’s has already been taxed. So it’s not just 22% is it, it’s technically 42%.

Introducing taxation into what was a tax free wrapper is incredibly stupid and opens the door to further taxes and the potential of ending ISA’s as we know today.

The new rules (if they happen) are about future contributions, not existing savings

Still, introducing any type of tax within an ISA (even if it is only on the interest of cash) adds a layer of unnecessary complication and isn’t going to help encourage new investors to use the S&S ISA

Thanks for explaining this, my only question is why would anyone want to hold large sums of cash in a stocks and shares ISA anyway? Surely it is better to invest ?

So how long does it sit as cash, because on T212 when you sell it the goes into your cash pot in order to withdraw - is there a timeframe it has to be withdrawn in?

So there’s no gain to having any cash sitting in your stocks and shares ISA then. Even if it’s for easier automation purposes, they want to tax us again!
