Why Wenger had to "sell to buy" during the Emirates years* When Arsenal built the Emirates Stadium in 2006, they took on ~£260m in bank debt. To get the loans, the banks wanted financial guarantees. That meant Arsenal had to commit to paying about *£24 million every year for 17 years* to service the stadium debt. *What that did to transfers:* 1. *Tight budget* - That £24m came out before Wenger could spend on players. The club had to "balance the books" first. 2. *Sell to survive* - Wenger said the strategy became: "sell every year and to buy less expensive players". Big earners like Fabregas, Van Persie, Nasri, and Adebayor were sold, and replaced with younger, cheaper talent. 3. *Bank restrictions* - Wenger noted there were "financial restrictions from the banks because we have built the stadium" and "we have to respect the financial plan". It wasn't a clause that banned expensive signings outright. It was just math: pay the bank first, then whatever was left was the transfer budget. *When it ended:* Wenger called 2013-2014 the turning point. Once the financial pressure eased and the debt was being paid down, Arsenal could "compete with everybody on the financial front" again. That's when Ozil and Sanchez arrived. Basically: Emirates debt = 9 years of selling stars to pay the mortgage. #arsenal #arsenewenger #emiratesstadium #behindthescenes @arsenal
