Cheap Timing Chain Repair Failed In Just One Year | Audi 1.2 TSi. • In this video, we work on an Audi A1 equipped with the 1.2 TSI petrol engine. The owner complained about a very loud metallic rattling noise during cold startup, although the engine itself was running smoothly after starting. • According to the owner, the timing chain had already been replaced about one year ago, and the vehicle had driven only 15,000–20,000 km since the repair. Despite this, the startup rattling noise returned again surprisingly quickly. • We decided to disassemble the engine and inspect the timing system to understand what caused the problem to come back so soon. • After disassembly, the main issue became obvious. During the previous repair, only a partial timing chain service had been performed. Only the chain, hydraulic tensioner, and plastic guides were replaced. • Critical components such as the camshaft gear, crankshaft gear, oil pump gear, and oil pump chain were left untouched and remained heavily worn. • Because of this existing wear, the new timing chain started wearing out immediately after installation, causing the exact same problem to return within only one year. • The lesson here is simple: the owner chose a cheaper repair option, paying almost half the price compared to a full timing system service. • As this repair clearly shows, incomplete timing chain replacement often leads to repeat failures.
