The Vietnam War was a long and devastating conflict that lasted from 1955 to 1975. It was fought between North Vietnam, led by the communist government of Ho Chi Minh, and South Vietnam, which was supported by the United States and its allies. The war was part of the larger Cold War, as the United States wanted to stop the spread of communism in Asia. The United States sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers to Vietnam and used advanced weapons, including helicopters, bombers, and chemical defoliants such as Agent Orange. However, the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong used guerrilla warfare, making it difficult for American forces to win. As the war continued, many people in the United States protested against it because of the high number of casualties and the lack of progress. In 1973, the United States withdrew its troops after the Paris Peace Accords. Two years later, in 1975, North Vietnam captured Saigon, ending the war. Vietnam was reunited under communist rule. The Vietnam War resulted in the deaths of an estimated 2 to 3 million Vietnamese civilians and soldiers, as well as more than 58,000 American soldiers.
