I want to boost this video because I think it’s very important information. I didn’t even know this. Agree. My grandmother had some aunts who passed for white. They cut off the whole family and we have no idea what happened to them because they had to abandon us to pass.

One caveat- white isn’t a ethnicity, however there are ethnicities within whiteness- So they could also take on an ethnicity that helps them pass into whiteness

I think the community is confused as a whole. The kids today haven’t a clue. I’ll admit it’s a social construct and thus can be murky at best when it comes to defining groups. But, I’ve noticed that my kids at work are having a hard time defining me. When I explain I’m mixed they counter with “but your hair is like ours.” “Yes, my dad is black…I’m black.” “You’re black?!” “Yes. What did you think I was??” “IDK. White maybe or something else.” “Do I look like a white person to you?!” At this point I’m just tired.

YES! The confusion is coming from the fact that we just don't know our history. We got so caught up and not wanting to hear anything about the past because it was painful, but then we abandoned certain information that you gain from knowing about the conditions of the past. on my mom's side of the family we have people who had decided in the ''60s that they were going to start passing as white. Even though they grew up as black, when they decided to pass as white they did it as a family and when my mom saw them out in public and tried to speak to them they pretended as if they didn't know her. They stopped coming around the rest of the family, no one ever saw them again except for that one instance where my mom ran into them.

Myself and my son are Mexicans. We are both very white. Literally can’t convince anyone we are Mexican. I don’t bother, but my son is proud of his heritage and presses the topic when it arises. So like now, he roots for Mexico at the World Cup, and gets told he needs to root for USA soccer. When he was a baby, folks would give his dad a double take stare as they noticed a dark skinned Mexican with our Casper white baby.

Thank you!!! Spot on! I have white passing family, they don’t want anyone knowing they are actually of African descent. Sneak visits to those of us who are black. I also have white presenting family who let people know they are indeed Black and of African descent.
