Black is the one color recycling machines can’t sort — so old TV casings, computers, and circuit boards get ground up and remolded into kitchen tools and takeout trays. The problem: those electronics were loaded with flame retardants. Chemicals built to stop a TV from catching fire — not to sit against your food. One of them, decaBDE, was banned by the EPA in 2021. A 2024 study still found it in 14 everyday household products — at up to 1,200 times the EU’s legal limit. And here’s the part nobody talks about: there is no federal rule requiring black plastic food products to be tested or labeled for any of this. Not one.
