I’m frustrated that so much anger is being aimed at African migrants when they make up only a small share of South Africa’s population and hold relatively little economic power. Let’s ask a harder question: why are we blaming people from Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho or Ghana instead of confronting the structural inequalities that apartheid left behind? Foreign workers didn’t create the Bantustans. They didn’t write apartheid laws. They didn’t seize the most productive land or build an economy where wealth became concentrated over generations. For decades, South Africa’s mines relied on workers from across the continent. Men from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and elsewhere worked alongside South Africans because the economy depended on migrant labour. This isn’t a new phenomenon. If we want real change, we should focus on the systems that continue to produce inequality rather than turning our frustration toward people who are often struggling to survive themselves. Political freedom was a monumental achievement, but many South Africans still feel excluded from meaningful economic opportunity. That conversation is uncomfortable—but it’s necessary. History becomes dangerous when it convinces ordinary people to fight each other instead of questioning the structures that keep inequality alive. #xenophobia #africa #whatifcap #racism #History
