@coachmontessori: In Montessori, we don’t change the plan because of a tantrum. If it’s time to leave the beach, it’s time to leave the beach. A tantrum doesn’t change that. Many adults make the mistake of stopping, negotiating, delaying, or giving one more chance in the hope that the tantrum will stop. But all that teaches the child is that tantrums are effective. A tantrum is a sign that a child is struggling with a situation. It is not a reason to change the boundary. So we continue. Calmly. Respectfully. Confidently. We leave the beach. We get in the car. And once the child is safe, we can help them regulate those big emotions. Because supporting emotions doesn’t mean changing every decision because of them.
