So I was taking a college course last summer called interdisciplinary women’s studies and the professors research was centered on feminism and pop culture and we had AMAZING discussions about love island. We talked about everything you’re saying here, but just some things to add! 1. The community building aspect can’t be ignored. So many people watch this show because everyone else is watching it and since there’s new episodes 5 days a week you either watch it or you are excluded. They’re capitalizing on people’s loneliness and need to be in the “in” group. 2. They guarantee drama from the very beginning by manufacturing monogamy the very first night but then forcing them into poly situations. It makes for great tv! So many great and scholarly conversations come out of this show, I’m excited for the research to start coming in

I mean we did have Insecure on HBO which was very comparable to Girlfriends and there are some others but they’re set within black tv. Which means if you’re not locked into black television then you probably are missing it.

Tbh I feel like in general there just so much less media with black people these days. I was just rewatching the matrix series and I genuinely think that if it was made today there would be significantly less black people in it
