Add a small amount of salt, then gradually add water while mixing to evenly hydrate the flour. Continue adding water until small clumps begin to form when the flour is squeezed by hand. (For 500g of rice flour, use about 150ml of water.) Steam the prepared rice flour mixture for about 30 minutes. To check if it is fully cooked, insert a chopstick into the center. If no dry flour sticks to the chopstick, it is ready. Once steamed, knead the dough thoroughly until it becomes smooth and elastic. Roll and shape the dough into long garaetteok (Korean rice cake sticks). *Note:* Since this homemade version is made without the specialized machines used in rice cake shops, the texture may not be as chewy as commercially made garaetteok.
