Today, I was getting ready to head home after finishing my shift walking dogs at the shelter when I passed a kennel and noticed a giant German Shepherd lying quietly on his bed. With all the barking and chaos inside the shelter, it’s rare to go by a kennel and see a dog that’s simply lying there. So that alone made me stop… 🥺 His name is King. I walked in his kennel to make sure he was okay. He looked up at me for just a second… then slowly put his head back down. That completely broke my heart.💔 I knew I couldn’t just leave, so I took him out to spend some time with him. When I looked at his kennel card, I realized he had only been surrendered yesterday. King is an 8-year-old German Shepherd weighing over 100 pounds. He’s housebroken, gets along with kids, cats, and other dogs, and he’s everything you’d hope for in a best friend. Once we got outside, little by little, I watched him come back to life. He started wagging his tail. He took treats as gently as any dog I’ve ever met. Then, almost like he wanted to make me proud, he showed me he knows “sit” and “shake.” He is one of the sweetest, gentlest dogs I have ever met. Later, I learned why he had been surrendered. His family said he could no longer go up and down the stairs because he likely has hip dysplasia, something that’s unfortunately common in German Shepherds. Then I learned something that made my heart sink even more. King was adopted from same shelter just last year… …and now, one year later, he’s back. Watching him walk back into that kennel after our time together was heartbreaking. I knew he’d be lying on that same bed again, wondering where his family went and why he is here…🥺 King deserves so much more than this. He’s a senior. He’s gentle. He’s loving. And he deserves a family that will love him through every stage of his life. I’m hoping the right family will see his video… Let’s help King find the forever home he truly deserves… this time, for good. • • #germanshepherd #gsd #dog #malamute #rescue
