There is a massive difference between holding a passport and having an ancestral, spiritual connection to a continent. Today, we are seeing an insidious rise in white nationalist ideologies across Southern Africa built on fabricated narratives, "empty land" myths, and a desperate attempt to flatten what it truly means to be African. The settlers that reside in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia benefit from the systems of oppression, racism and othering out in place and have built this cognitive dissonance currenttly to claim ownership of an African Identity, when just 30 years ago they considered Africans sub human. Longevity does not create legitimacy when that longevity was purchased with colonial violence, apartheid, and stolen land. A settler’s grandchildren are still settlers.
