@arisofficehours: Most PhD applicants say at least one of these in their interview. They probably shouldn’t. #LearnOnTikTokContest #EduTokContest #PhD #HigherEd
not having questions ready is an easy way to burn your entire interview. always come with more questions than you think you need so you don't run out!

Are PhD interviews common in the US? I’m going into my PhD in Canada and you need a clear, specific proposal for your dissertation when you apply (not just an idea of some questions) but none of the schools I applied to/got offers for had interview components

I’m not sure what interview you’re talking about. Acceptance in PhD programs is based upon GPA, transcripts , possible research experience, introductory essays and especially recommendation letters. A program that receives hundreds of applications cannot afford to interview applicants.

For European PhDs that are parts of projects: you should have a proposal in mind and be ready to name the sourcing and research you drew inspiration from :) be reflective and accept feedback — you don’t have to defend every decision & you shouldn’t !!

Okay, tiktok. I'm not planning to get PhD, but I'm flattered to be the target of algorithm. I guess at least it's a signal for self education

I applied to chemistry PhD programs this past cycle, a majority of the programs are doing interviews because the lack of funding. They said they NEED to make sure the funding is worth going to the students. With that said, a lot of prestigious programs I applied to always did interviews prior to lack of funding.

I’d just like to add that this advice does not apply to all fields and universities. In my field you absolutely need to be a basically ready-made researcher with a good research proposal and you know what you’re going into. If you’d ask how the research works or what students do after you’d be considered not ready and unprepared
