took me quite a few lessons but literally just use your palm to push it out from 2nd to the center and push forward to 3rd

He is gripping the gear stick incorrectly, he needs to cup his hand on the left of the stick and gently guide it from 2nd to 3rd gear. Similarly when he is going from 3rd to 2nd he needs to cup the gear stick on the right side ( so the back of his hand is facing him) and gently guide the stick into 2 nd gear. That’s how I was taught.

I think it would’ve been better if you teached him right after the second time, it seems like no one showed him the technique before (to just let the stick center and push it lightly into third)

This was me, I always struggled with going to 3rd gear but now....

I learned to have very very little tension on the gear knob. Usually stopping me from forcing 1st to second when my car isnt happy. (Its temperamental when cold.) But It let's be follow the gear stick from second to third and third to fourth which makes shifts much smother and easier. It also has prevented me from damaging my shift forks as theyre a little bit worn and sometimes struggle going into third.
