@tilscience: One of the darkest chapters in British history is tied directly to insurance. Lloyds used to insure slave ships and listed formerly enslaved people as “cargo”. In November 1781, the crew of a British ship threw 132 enslaved Africans into the ocean. Alive. Not because of mutiny or disease, but because of an insurance clause. Under maritime law at the time, if enslaved people died of illness, the ship’s owners couldn’t claim the loss. But if they were thrown overboard as “jettison” aka a necessary sacrifice to save the ship, then insurers were legally required to pay. This case was taken to court, not as a murder trial, which it was, but about who was liable to pay for the lost “cargo”. We do an entire deep dive about this in our latest YT video live now! #darkhistory #truecrime #History

I would encourage you to balance this story with the relic tale of William Wilberforce

England prohibited slavery but the banks continued to fund it in the States. They are funding the drug cartels today.

I continue to be disgusted about things my country has done, whilst I am powerless to change them I think it is important that we share these stories far and wide so people know there was no mythical positive colonial rule. Even if people think Britain invented some decent things that must be overshadowed by the evil they did.

This was actually briefly mentioned in Pirates of the Caribbean. Jack Sparrow wouldn’t sail a slave ship so he became a pirate.

I will never compare a human life to finances but your TikTok made me think of AIG insuring mortgage back securities that created the great recession
