The mere presence of the phone in sight, even face down on the table, is a problem. It's a signal that at any moment, that phone could light up and take your attention from the moment, so it's a threat for as long as it's there. Remove the phone altogether. Treat it like we treated landlines. Set it aside in a designated spot, out of reach, and turn off app notifications. If it rings, who cares. Treat it like a landline. Let it go to voicemail. BE PRESENT.

So like did you want to become closer with him when he spaced himself and stopped acting like he wanted to be with you, that’s when you started to work on things, or did he make it clear he still wanted to be with you but, just still focused on his own life

My ex would even answer the phone if we were being intimate. He wasn’t capable of prioritizing the connection at that time. Access to broader range of therapists and perspectives via my phone showed me how dysfunctional and abusive my situation was.
