this might be me pulling at strings here, cornplating if you will but naim has a ring around his neck up until he gets “healed” which i’m assuming is his fathers wedding ring. if naim recognises he is the only thing arleen has left of tom — despite her actively ignoring him in favour of jesus — and that this ring is a reminder of the life they once had, one they seem to still share somewhat during that first church scene, then i think it makes sense for the ring to go once he has been healed. depending on the year it’s set — tho it could potentially irrelevant given the cultural context of the movie, still — the healing process is naims way of reconciling that he is gay, unlike hunter, he doesn’t deny it, he’s just scared of it. the absence of the ring could be a representation of his acknowledgement he will never get married but also him severing that connection to his mother. the life he once had is gone and he doesn’t desire to remember the woman married to his father when that same woman has forced this onto her own child, a child she neglected at the darkest period of his life in favour of a faith actively killing naim and his people.
