My gym allows little kids to watch our workouts. I bring my 2-year-old son and the other night another mom brought her 2-year-old daughter. the little girl was mesmerized by us pushing the heavy sled during the workout. I wonder how my relationship with my body would have been different if I'd seen my mother taking the time to make herself stronger instead of putting both of us on the cabbage soup diet.

“Do not say anything to them” this is amazing advice. Criticizing weight, especially without helping them create healthy habits and giving healthy solutions, is the way EDs are created.

my parents took me to a nutritionist when I was 9 because i was overweight. we went every week for a year even though I obviously was not in charge of any of my food. i remember every single comment that was made about me and my body and how they made me feel. my parents barely remember the whole thing

Adding this: if your child identifies their weight as an issue do NOT be dismissive! Provide them healthy solutions. Nothing has ever been made worse by movement and healthy food.

My daughter is overweight, she dances 8 hours a week, we take a Sunday walk as a family and we eat healthy dinners in the week at the dinner table together - we def have treats every now and then .. She is just hungry ALL the time and will raid the cupboards. It’s been an issue for a while and she is now talking about her body :(

You do a really good job providing advice in a way that doesn’t come off as competitive or superior. I can tell you really want to help people. Thank you 💕

Love this! As a former fat kid, daughter of the 80’s WW mom eating 800 calories, I was given zero tools to fix my situation and have struggled my entire life with weight and with not feeling like I was ever “enough”… I have a 6 year old daughter now in the 90th percentile for height and weight and am trying so hard to not put my shit on her. 🥰 thank you for your advice! Agree SO MUCH that you can never ever ever discuss their weight or body directly with them.

I’m morbidly obese but currently trying to lose body fat and get fit. I take my daughter with me to the gym and we plan meals that have good macro and micro nutrients. We call it rainbow plates. It’s hard with daughters especially when we grew up with diet culture.

I would also say if you know you’re feeding your child healthy foods and they’re still overweight, take them to a doctor for a checkup & ask for blood work. I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism since puberty & didn’t get treated until I was 22. I was overweight no matter what I did & it was always a conflict in our house & contributed to me being bullied.

my sons medication has made him gain so much weight 😭 he is incredibly active (thankfully) so that’s helped majorly. I would never say anything to him about it but I am worried about him being bullied. If I were to take him off this medication, his quality of life would be awful. He can’t even function. He was having debilitating anxiety, panic attacks, aggression. I can’t do that to him. It would be sooo much worse if he didn’t eat well and wasn’t active but it’s still tough.

I started to have weight issues at age 12 but at 12 I was fed McDonald’s almost daily and was allowed to have as many chips, soda, etc that I wanted. Your advice is good 👍

There are soooo many parents that will be butt hurt over this, but it needs to be broadcasted on national TV. This world treating children like their brain is formed enough to make major life decisions IS INSANE. Be a parent and do what is BEST for your kid!!

Is it bad parenting to have a kid who is underweight too? I see that a whole lot of are we just focusing on being overweight when worse outcomes come from being chronically underweight?

Yes! My son dealt with an injury and couldn't be active for months. he gained weight. We framed the new eating habits as a way to get ready for sports and focused on what he can eat to feel strong and healthy. never talked about his weight or calories and fat etc.
