i think if you asked henry, he would say he saw richard as useful and interesting but in fact he saw a directionless, blank slate, puppet and most importantly viewer. he could paint exactly the picture he wanted because richard was a blank canvas looking for EXACTLY that, a beautiful painting, story to identify with

I think to henry, richard was just the most tolerable “outsider” there was. He knew that richard so badly wanted to be apart of this superior group that he would do close to anything to be a part of it. Whereas the rest of the group, while still submissive in terms of following orders, where still a little quick to question. Henry took the opportunity to make richard feel like he owes Henry after he helps him in the winter segment of the book. Its so obvious that NOTHING henry does it done without a motive that benefits him or his plans.

I think Henry was brewing a bit of a god complex and wanted to see how much he could get away with, and he sure got away with a lot. he won basically every challenge he seemed to attack. it reminds me of the gods, how immortality makes everything seem mundane. Henry's immense intellect made everything in life mundane, so the only thing that was remotely interesting was to see how he could manipulate other people's lives, and he did just that.

that's exactly why the secret history is my favorite book. there's just so many things that are unseen but SO interesting and meaningful in the book. that's all those details that forms the whole story and I genuinely love when people analyze it deeply.

yess henry was manipulating richard practically throughout the entire novel. The part where Henry “saves” richard and takes him to the hospital was completely calculated bc Henry had already been back in hampden for a bit and yet he kept richard in the dark. Mr Roland the professor Richard works for even mentions seeing a friend of Richard’s one who he describes to richard and his description sounds a lot like henry but ofc Richard doesn’t think so bc henry as far as he knew was in italy. During a night where Richard checked in a hotel someone tried to pick his door lock and out of his window at the warehouse he sees someone he describes with a similar look to henry but chalks up to a hallucination. in reality henry was stalking him waiting for the perfect time. a time where richard was most vulnerable and weak and also to get him before bunny could. Henry saves him to gain richard’s trust so he can then tell him abt the bacchanal

henry for sure was watching and stalking richard before he “found” him injured and sick from living in the cold warehouse. he wanted to be able to read and understand richard so he could manipulate him. he wanted to see how high richard’s ego was- how long he’d last in the cold until he set his pride aside and asked for help. henry used richard’s weakness of longing to be included and self- loathing, self pitying personality against him
