The Nazi ideal of femininity emphasized a “natural” appearance, and excessive cosmetics, perfume, and luxury fashion were often criticized as decadent or un-German. Meanwhile, in the United States, red lipstick became a patriotic statement. Cosmetic companies produced special shades for women serving in the military and working in factories.
