Most action fans know Marc Dacascos from Crying Freeman, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven or John Wick: Chapter 3. What many don't know is that he was practically born into martial arts. His father, Al Dacascos, was one of the leading figures of Wun Hop Kuen Do, a hybrid fighting system that combined Kung Fu, Karate, Jujutsu and Filipino martial arts decades before mixed martial arts became mainstream. Marc started training as a child and quickly built a reputation on the tournament circuit. His breakthrough came with American Samurai (1992) and Only the Strong (1993), but Crying Freeman (1995) turned him into a cult icon. Based on the famous manga series, the film allowed Dacascos to showcase the unique qualities that separated him from other action stars: speed, elegance, athleticism and an almost hypnotic screen presence. Crying Freeman changed his life in another way. During production he met actress Julie Condra, who played Emu. The two later married and remain together today. Not every project was a success. Double Dragon (1994) is often listed among the weakest video game adaptations ever made. While the film became a notorious flop, many fans still argue that Dacascos himself was one of the few bright spots. Over the following decades he built one of the most unusual careers in action cinema. He starred in Drive, played Eric Draven in The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, appeared in the French cult classic Brotherhood of the Wolf, fought alongside Hong Kong stars in China Strike Force and later introduced himself to a new generation as Zero in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Outside acting, millions of viewers know him as the Chairman from Iron Chef America, proving he was far more versatile than the average martial arts star.
