That is almost all that happens in “Tom’s Diner,” one of Suzanne Vega’s signature songs. Nothing dramatic happens, and no emotion is shouted out loud. Yet its calm, observational gaze captures the distance between people and the quiet feeling of being alone with surprising clarity. Suzanne Vega is a singer-songwriter who captures the atmosphere of New York almost like a short story. “Tom’s Diner” was written in 1982 and became the opening track of her 1987 album Solitude Standing. In Japan, some people may also remember its melody from a late-1980s TV commercial, even if they did not know the title. The original version is completely a cappella, with no typical chorus. The same melody repeats like an inner monologue, making it feel as if we are sitting right beside her thoughts.
