I'm shocked that Nanking wasn't included as a premier example of human depravity, this list skews extremely medieval but there are very few examples of not even systemic or authoritarian cruelty, but individual cruelty on the mass scale like Nanking. The Imperial Japanese army weren't even ordered to do what they did, they chose to. It wasn't their objective, they didn't have any theological or ethnic reason for it, they did it because no one could stop them.
