No, it's more genius than that. you don't have to buy the steam machine. you buy and piece together your own machine or pre-built and then put steam OS on it when it releases. the genius move is the Steam OS itself. people don't understand how massive the steamos is going to be once it releases publicly.

to be fair to its specs, games shouldn't require a $2k graphics card to run at pretty looking settings. lots of modern games are horrifically optimized.

I don't know what market they are targeting. it's too expensive for a console gamer to give it a go, and any pc gamer can pick up a second hand pc/build one which is going to be much better for the same price.

A buddy of mine brought up a good point - it's clearly marketed toward people who don't own a PC but their friends do, and they want to play games together without needing to get an actual PC. I don't think that market is big enough to sustain the thing, but it was a choice I suppose
