RAPTURE STORIES SERIES
Episode 24: Under the Fallen Stones
The sound was deafening.
Concrete.
Steel.
Glass.
Everything crashed down at once.
Emeka was thrown to the ground as a cloud of dust swallowed the east wing.
For several seconds, nobody could see anything.
Nobody could breathe.
Nobody could speak.
Then the screams began.
"Help!"
"Over here!"
"Is everyone alive?"
Slowly, the dust started to settle.
Emeka pushed himself up and looked around.
Chioma was helping two children.
Chidi was pulling an elderly man away from a fallen wall.
Chief Okafor was on his knees, coughing but alive.
Little David stood frozen, staring at the mountain of rubble where Pastor Samuel had been.
"No..." the boy whispered.
"No..."
Tears rolled down his face.
Emeka felt his heart breaking.
He wanted to run back.
To dig through the debris.
To find Pastor Samuel.
But deep inside, he already knew.
The old preacher had made his choice.
He had stayed behind so others could live.
Suddenly, a weak voice echoed from the rubble.
"Help..."
Everyone froze.
Another voice.
Then another.
There were still survivors trapped beneath the fallen stones.
Without hesitation, Emeka rushed forward.
"Start digging!"
For hours they worked.
Using broken metal.
Using their bare hands.
Ignoring the danger.
One by one, they pulled people free.
Some were injured.
Some were unconscious.
Some could barely speak.
But they were alive.
As evening approached, the fires around the headquarters began to die down.
The once-powerful building was now a ruin.
The symbol of the world's government lay broken.
And all over the city, reports of disasters continued.
Earthquakes.
Floods.
Famine.
Darkness.
Fear.
People everywhere were beginning to realize that human power could not save them.
Then little David tugged on Emeka's sleeve.
"Look."
Emeka turned.
A small section of the rubble had shifted.
Beneath it, something was visible.
A Bible.
Pastor Samuel's Bible.
Its cover was damaged.
Its pages were covered with dust.
But it was still there.
Emeka carefully picked it up.
Inside was a handwritten note.
The old preacher's final message.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
And what he read brought tears to everyone's eyes.
