@quantumqalb: WORSE THAN ADULTERY? Theft? Despicable. Adultery? A devastating betrayal of sacred trust. As Muslims, we rightly shudder at these major sins. We do not, under any circumstances, condone them. But what about a casual lie? A “harmless” deception to save face? We often treat lying as a minor infraction that doesn’t quite compare to the horror of stealing or breaking a marriage vow. Well, this should shock you. In this post the great scholar Shaykh Muhammad Metwalli al-Sha’rawi RA breaks down a profound prophetic reality that will shake your conscience. When the Prophet ﷺ was asked whether a believer could fall into major sins like theft or adultery, his response was a chilling acknowledgement of human vulnerability: “He might.” Human beings are weak; they slip, they yield to temptation, and they fail. But when asked: “Can a believer be a liar?” The Answer from the lips of the Messenger ﷺ was an absolute, uncompromising: “NO.” Let that sink in. Lying is not a secondary sin; it is a fundamental disqualifier of true faith. The rationale is terrifyingly simple. A fixed penalty (Hadd) exists for theft and adultery because Islam acknowledges a believer might succumb to human weakness. But no fixed worldly penalty was set for lying because it shouldn’t even be conceivable for a true believer to lie. Why? Because lying attacks the very foundation of your Islam. If your tongue becomes accustomed to falsehood in everyday matters, how can anyone trust the purity of your ultimate declaration? How can you look at yourself when you say “Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah” if your tongue is an instrument of deception? If you lie about the foundation, you compromise your entire faith. The next time you are tempted to tell a quick lie, let this Hadith take complete possession of your senses. Let it freeze the words in your throat. Remember that a believer can stumble, but a believer cannot be a liar. Guard your tongue, protect your Shahadah, and live in absolute truth.
