@pastorpauldrees: I should add, I don’t think any of the people who commented had ill will, and I thank them for spurring this conversation. There are certainly quartz watches that can last a long time, though such models are mainly digital, and I much prefer analog. Also, this model retailed around 400-500 when it was given to me, and can certainly be found for the high 500s now. I think Christians should be very careful around items that are considered ‘luxury’, especially to avoid buying things simply for the sake of being seen with such luxuries. Anyone who has seen my car would recognize that I don’t have that problem. There is something to be said about owning a few higher quality items, and being happy with them (rather than just going back into the consumer loop of buying more), which is ultimately why I made this video. I hope it leads you to think about your own life, and ask when enough is enough! #progressiveclergy #pastorpauldrees #Lutheran #ELCA

The people who criticize your watch are the same who are ok with Elon being a trillionaire

Step one, decent watch. Step two, private jets.

Honestly not even a fair critique tbh. It’s less than a higher end Apple Watch and won’t end up as tech waste. You could be wearing a brand new Rolex Daytona and I’d just assume you really liked watches and saved up forever for one.

"This was a gift", done. No further explanation needed. The other two points are good and valid, too, but an important part of community work is the close connections we can build with people and both giving and receiving gifts can be part of that. 🤷♀️

As non religous person, that’s not a fancy watch but a nice solid watch. No judgement here

Generosity is not the same as abstaining from comfort, convenance, or even luxury. It’s about recognizing your excess and not indulging fully. You don’t have live on a minimum, but you don’t have to keep the maximum.

Peter Singer in "Famine, Affluence, and Morality" would argue that you should still sell the watch. I don't live by his arguments but they are quite difficult to refute.

People really have no idea how rich the rich are. An $800 watch or a $1000 phone are nothing compared to the wealth of billionaires.

it's a watch. even if you purchased it yourself, I'd assume you purchased it as an investment for the sake of sanity and sustainability

I love that you continuously point out practices of systemic equity and individual equity, and always make sure to emphasize fixing systems instead of badgering people.

if the higher price tag means that the workers got paid properly, that seems more ethical to me.

There's a big difference in owning an expensive watch you use every day, and owning 20 expensive watches that gather dust in a drawer for the majority of the year. Greed is not simply having things, it is having things you don't need for the simple sake of having them. Defining something you "need" is different for everyone, and the ability to justify it as you do here is what sets you apart from someone that might own that same watch for the simple reason of wanting it.

I like to imagine God loves us to have our nice things as long as we aren't doing it to excess. I like to think of him as a happy a Father watching us open our gifts at Christmas. I don't think God ever wanted us to suffer in poverty. He just wanted us to have solidarity with those who do.

I wouldn’t consider a well and ethically made watch a luxury, especially if you really only have one. A lot of things that are considered “luxuries”, (nice clothes, shoes, furniture), aren’t actually luxuries. You spend more on cheap items that have to be repeatedly replaced than one well made item that will last ten times as long. The idea that well made necessities (which if you wear watches, I assume there’s a use to you! Stop watch, not always having access to another clock, etc) are luxuries because there’s cheaper, worse options, is a fault of capitalism and forcing consumerism.
