An mcp is just a bunch of API’s structured in a way that makes it easier for the ai to use. Still just an api basically.

This is wrong, MCP is an api, it’s a protocol layer for APIs designed for Agentic applications (models) to call/use tools in other applications. API is a generic term for the interface layer between applications/programs, APIs can be Remote REST APIs, local syscalls, or even MCPs. All MCPs are APIs not all APIs are MCP.

Keep it simple. Will or can mcp connect 2 software together 🤭

You’re making it too complex! An MCP is an API for agents / AI

Kim or is it? :
I’d just say that an MCP just describes how to use an API for an AI model so they can build their own api calls automatically

You are talking more like a concrete rest http api endpoint but API can be even more complex like graphql endpoint. Basicly it is like comparing apples to fruit. MCP - model context protocol -> definition of connection and/or transmission. API - application interface -> hey this is an API it can be communicated use proper Protocol to communicate which is in the description of the API.

I don’t agree with this, if you are not writing your APIs in such a way that even external sources are calling them, then when 3rd party integrations come along, you are having to write additional API’s. Treat yourself as your own third-party and write them correctly. That way you can integrate with yourself.

Hmm not a techie but an API is not always custom build. The APIs are there and whoever wants to connect just needs to read them

Also, as well as allowing agents to connect to a variety of apps (widening the scope), they can also be used to narrow the scope and tighten the guardrails of what is available via the api (example: only access *some* folders/ read only access, etc) very useful for adding and extra guardrail layer over the main API. I’ve learned a lot since I commented on your last MCP video, haha!

I would disagree. An API is a generic format that anyone can talk with you. An MCP is a type of API specifically for any LLM

WDYM? An MCP server for Slack won't connect your AI to Teams and vice versa.

How us an API for Jira different from an MCP for Jira. Apart from the fact that Claude uses a quadrillion tokens when I use an MCP
