I want to know why I get a bill sometimes a year or more later? I kid you not, my husband had a biopsy and the lab bill showed up over a year later.

As someone who works in healthcare compliance and audits claims for nearly ten years, the answer is simple: I don’t know.

Becuase insurance has re written their contracts for example: you see the dr. The dr charges $200 to your insurance for the visit. Insurance gives them $50 and says write off the rest. So with that $50 they have to pay wages, building fees, and staff wages. So drs are now putting prices on patients

it's because the physician practice is a department of the hospital. hospital will change the facilities fees and the physician will charge for the visit. it's a common practice. if you don't want to pay both, ask the office if the clinic is a Hospital Outpatient Department (Provider Based Clinic is another term) or not. and go to a clinic that is not a hospital outpatient dept. this has nothing to do with your insurance and most insurance won't approve HOPD visits.

Because the MDs are independent and not hospital employees so they also need to be paid

And while we’re talking about it why am I getting bills 1-2 years after the event. Bills that (if paid during the year I received said service) would have met my deductible for my insurance plan. But I didn’t pay them that year because they didn’t send them until now. And they don’t count towards my deductible this year because they’re “outside the coverage dates”

with the insurance there is a deductible and out of pocket deductible. one those are met ins will pay more. also for billing there is physician side and hospital side. your outpatient surgeries, labs, radiology and other stuff are billed thru hospital. however not all physicians are billed with the hospital bc Lot of them are 3rd party contractors just like radiology cardiology tech who read your testing. estimates j hate them. so when the hospital system generates.an estimate it is just that an estimate. you have options!!! one don't pay it upfront. wait til you are in front of someone the day of your price your are registered for. why?! bc there could be a sched error, or something happens and you don't complete the test then you Rent out of anything. if you come in verify the last time your benefits were ran so the deductibles and stuff update. when your acct is pre registered, then depending if an auth is needed auth team verifies benefits as well and works with the INS to get correct cot codes and phys codes. but aren't always correct. please make sure if you have multiple ins they are in the correct filing order. don't always assume your registration rep will know bc many people work an acct and move things around based on the ins side. also with estimates in person or copays to in lay a partial let it go thru billing and see what your actual charges are. if you don't have in ask for a self oY discount if offered, or a financial application from the hospital to see if you qualify or assistance and or set up payment arrangements. my favorite alot of older and disabled people have Medicare a and b only and don't realize there is a deductibe from them and the 80/20 rule afterwards if h don't have a secondary ins.or supplement plan. most likely people have advantage plans which is combines with Medicare but you still have copays the bigger he test the bigger the copay. so.see.if you qualify for Medicaid if you do bc the financial aspect is what helps. please.be kind to the registration teams at your hospitals and physicians office bc things change daily for us and we try our best to keep up. I'ma have so many payor codes it's crazy.

The physician is not employed by or paid by the hospital. If you have surgery, you will get a facility charge, anesthesia charge, and surgeon charge at least.

If you give more details maybe I can help? But it makes sense if you saw a doctor in a facility to get both charges.

The doctors don’t work for the hospital, they do their own billing, the hospital bills for facility charges, all the supplies needed for that procedure. Also depends on your insurance and how they have negotiated the insurance policy.

It’s always been that way. The hospital bills you for their part and physician bills for his time taking care if you.
