Sustainable or selective? The French Parliament just approved a bill targeting Shein and Temu. Each item sold will be taxed €5 starting in 2025, rising to €10 by 2030. Influencers promoting ultra-fast fashion could also face sanctions. In my opinion, this legislation is selective and elitist. It singles out two platforms while ignoring the fact that brands including Nike, H&M, Zara, and Adidas have been overproducing and exploiting workers for decades. Sure, they’re required to disclose environmental data, but they’re still exempt from the advertising ban. Yes, there’s absolutely a place for targeted campaigns, but only when they don’t let bigger polluters off the hook. The #SayNoToShein campaign is a solid example of this: focused, grassroots, and part of a wider push for fashion justice. If we want real change, the law needs to regulate all of Big Fashion, luxury and legacy brands included, not just the newcomers. It must be industry-wide and globally accountable.
