GLP-1 hair loss isn’t always as simple as “you lost weight too fast.” IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) is an important growth signal within the hair follicle. It helps support follicular cell activity and the anagen (or active growth phase) of the hair cycle. So what happens if your IGF-1 signaling is already genetically reduced? It doesn’t automatically mean you’ll lose your hair on a GLP-1. But it may mean this is a pathway we should be paying attention to…especially when we add other stressors like reduced caloric intake, lower protein intake, rapid weight loss, nutrient deficiencies, poor absorption, illness, or underlying pattern hair loss. This is why I believe you when you tell me You didn’t lose weight that fast. You’re eating enough. You’re getting in your protein. Maybe you are. That’s when we need to look deeper instead of assuming every person experiencing GLP-1 shedding has the exact same root cause. Your genetics. IGF-1 signaling. Iron + ferritin. Vitamin D. Zinc. Thyroid. Gut health and nutrient absorption. Protein and caloric intake. Metabolic health. And whether there was underlying AGA before the shedding began. And ideally…I want to know what these things look like BEFORE you start a GLP-1, so we have a baseline and can address vulnerabilities before significant shedding starts. This is one of the pathways I evaluate in my Root Cause Blueprint Bundle, where I combine genetics, bloodwork and other testing to understand the bigger picture behind someone’s hair loss. Hair loss is rarely about ONE marker. It’s about understanding the environment that follicle is trying to grow in. #HairLoss #glp1hairloss #sandiegotrichologist #hairshedding #HairLossTips
