I keep seeing this kind of content, and honestly, I think we’ve normalized the wrong message. Filipinos are constantly told to “be grateful” for having a job, to work hard, stay loyal, and never complain. But why don’t we also normalize knowing our worth?
Being grateful shouldn’t mean accepting low pay, unpaid overtime, disrespect, or the bare minimum. A company isn’t doing us a favor by hiring us we also bring skills, time, effort, and value that help the business grow. The relationship should be mutual.
I believe Filipinos are among the hardest-working people in the world. The problem isn’t our work ethic. The problem is that we’ve been taught to settle before we’ve been taught to value ourselves.
Imagine if more Filipinos knew their value, negotiated fairly, and stopped accepting exploitation just because they were told to be “thankful.” Maybe we’d finally stop normalizing being overworked and underpaid.
Be grateful for opportunities but never let gratitude become the reason you accept less than you deserve.
