I’m a huge proponent of natural fibers where it makes sense but most people have NO idea what they’re talking about. People want cotton workout clothes but also want them to be as compressive and sweatproof as Lululemon. They want silk shirts or dresses but they expect them to be under $200 and washable. They want a fur coat they can keep in their unairconditioned apartment all summer. Natural fibers are more expensive AND more work!!

Also how well it’s made matters! 100% cotton can be cheaply made just as much as a synthetic material

Natural fibers are great and synthetic fibers have their purposes too. You cannot make a pleated skirt with natural fibers. The shape will not hold after the first wear.

And the construction… paying for the construction is often worth it. People don’t understand that not all products while they might look the same on the outside, aren’t constructed the same on the inside. Better construction = better fit, better quality, longer lasting.

I’m so tired of people showing formal dresses that could only be achieved using synthetics, and being like “hundreds of dollars for polyester??!” as if every gown would work in silk

THIS. I wrote a substack on this a while back — some natural fibres are simply *not* fit for purpose when it comes to certain techniques/cuts/functionality objectives!

A lot of folks are also conflating “buying/wearing synthetic fibers” and “do fast-fashion hauls and then throw it all away in 6 months.” There’re plenty of situations where “plastic” fibers are the best choice, esp if you take care of your garments and keep them long-term.

Best way to be fiber sustainable is to buy less clothing over your life. So if the item needs to be made out of poly in order for it to be the ONE you buy your whole life? Worth it.

There's a book called Textilepedia that is super helpful for learning about the properties of different fibers and how they are used.

people want their clothes to be shiny, wrinkle free, machine washable, cheap, but also somehow pure silk and cotton? it doesn't work like that

Issey Miyake pleats please anyone? Needs to be polyester to make the pleat. Period. Natural fibers don't hold permanent pleats.

i live in natural fibers on daily but my formal wear is almost all poly. no way i could afford or justify a true silk gown for something ill only wear a handful of times.

The synthetic backlash has gotten so out of hand that I’ve seen videos and comments asking why athletic wear can’t be made of all natural fibers

The point is they will degrade and destroy the environment. Not that they aren’t useful.
