A couple of years into university, I got into an argument with my mother. I stayed calm and made her explain her position using logic beyond "I'm right because I'm your mother" and she couldn't. she couldn't answer "why?" And then she said something that has stuck with me. "you went to school and learned how to argue. I can't win anymore. I'm right, but you are twisting it so I can't win anymore."

I am more educated and socially aware than my parents. I tell my kids who are very young "I am smarter, faster, and stronger than you.. FOR NOW." I want them to be smarter than me. Isn't that the whole point of parenting?

I mean, we want our kids to be better than us —who wouldn’t? I love learning things from my adult children. It’s okay if we don’t agree with everything they think and believe and vice versa, but some of my favorite times with them are our deep philosophical decisions.

Back when I was trying to have a heart to heart with my mom I could visibly see her struggle to keep control when we were talking about how she thinks her parents did a shitty job and I mentioned that we should all strive to do better than our own parents. I was being honest but I can tell how she took it, but if my kids decide to become parents I hope they are 100% better than me! Also I do think I am morally, intellectually, and emotionally superior 🤷🏻♀️but that’s not why we don’t have a relationship

*sigh* I miss the good ol’ days when parents wanted their kids to be better off then they were. When having a child who was the first in the family to go to college was a point of pride. There’s a reason I love talking to my dad an haven’t spoken to my mother in years
