For tally marking, since the diagonal indicates the fifth, you don’t have to actually make all the four first marks

English tallying is probably based on Roman numerals, which in turn is probably based on the four fingers and thumb (thumb and first finger make the V for five)

I just learned some people make boxes - so 1-4 is one side of the box each, and 5 is a diagonal from corner to corner.

Just like how I still don't understand imperial units. I have do math everytime to convert them to metric units and remember C×9/5+32=F, 1 lb = 454 g, 1 cup = 235 ml, etc.
