@dr.shawna: Why do we trust the people and creators that we do? In this video, I explore the concept of borrowed authority and how we decide who has earned our trust online. There are so many visual and verbal cues people use to gain our trust and establish credibility, which ultimately is a performance of authority. We can look to work in the social sciences and social media studies to understand how this works, what it looks like, and what we can do. For more on that, let’s go to the research! #LearnOnTikTokContest #DidYouKnow #psychology #socialscience

I love when someone asks me to verify what they are saying, to ask questions.

I think either side of the argument is just a roundabout way to avoid holding the system accountable for any negative statistical average in modern medicine.

as a nurse i am always reminding and encouraging my patients to ask questions and point out mistakes. so many people just go along with the flow assuming us health care workers will never make mistakes or always know what we are doing.

I often reflect on this when the FYP gives me various healthcare professionals speaking on the president’s condition. Bc there are at least two who are not medical doctors but might have some professional insight into specific conditions yet who venture outside their credentials regularly. For example, I’m not interested I hearing from an SLP on the matter of hand tremors, nor am I interested in hearing from a PT on the matter of aphasia. That’s just not the kind of professional where I go to first for information on those issues. When I was served another one such video last night, it occurred to me that I’d never heard either one say, “That’s really outside my area,” “I’m not the first place you should go with this question,” or any other similar qualification. Which means that now in addition to looking for creators’ listing their expertise or credentials, I’m now trying to factor in asking myself, “How often has this person spoken to the limits of their expertise? Have I ever heard or seen them say that they aren’t qualified for a question they receive? Or maybe just not even the best spot for that?”

I have a running series called An American Guide to Epistemics, not an academic into but really contextualized for the American situation... this is from the series:

this!!! it's quite difficult to exist on the internet sometimes and see all the misinformation spread by people claiming expertise (it's not always intentional either). I always try to ensure I have done the research and include where I got my information from in my videos and I encourage people to read them themselves, as well as why I'm very clear about my credentials.

love the concept of intellectual humility. this might be an odd indicator of trust, but I think also how respect is given or shown means a lot, but I also know I come from a high context culture, which shapes what I feel makes communication more "trustworthy". as an add-on, respect to me doesn't mean to be overly polite - in fact, I think you can be blunt and respectful. anyway, this was a great video and gave me a lot to think about, thank you!

That's why the "with citations" part is so important: we don't *have* to trust you. Your claims can be verified

Absolutely brilliant commentary. Thank you for this message. Also, thank you for not dissing us folks who don't have PhDs but who do read academic resesrch papers and books on the topics. I started a company on presence and have conducted a great deal of research on neuroscience and sociology. In the beginning I doubted my own credibility because I didn't possess a PhD, but the research I've done has allowed me to have in depth, meaningful conversations with people with PhDs in the topic. That was the only validation I needed to feel better about myself. Intellectual humility is so important. Titles don't always equate to knowledge or ability.

I hope the first one wasn’t Prof Neil or the Speech Prof. I think it’s really important to remember that social media is not academia— we are here to be entertained. And to that end, the way Prof Neil and Speech Prof do their takedowns is almost always on point. Sure, it’s hard to be thorough in three minutes but I really do think they try. So I know you’re probably not likely to name names but I do wanna know.

I'm sure I've been taken in many times before, but also, I do trust you because I've been following you for a long time and am very used to you providing citations. You absolutely could mislead me. This is a very interesting topic to think about. (I am pretty sure I'm still going to trust you on most things though!)

I follow you bc of your credentials, citations, and integrity, as evidenced by this video. These are the things I look for in anyone I follow. Too many people offer their opinions as fact. Don’t bring receipts. And don’t offer the viewer a way to educate themselves further.
