Disagree. It’s not about achievement at all. The emotions in the wake of trauma are intense. Endurance sports are a path to diffuse them. Also, it gives you something you can control which provides a sense of safety and predictability.

For me it was about being able to get away from people entirely, I slowly became a hiker, then trail runner, then ultra runner, i took a job in the mountains so I could run alone everyday unseen and not have to talk to people at all, ive ran across the grand canyon, done r2r2r and ran multiple 30 50 and 100 K runs all alone, simply trying to beat my previous best time, ide be alone in the Sierra for up to 20 hours all day n half the night, ide rarely see more than 3 or 4 other people, sometimes none. I have only ran in one race tho in my 15 yearsof running, a 50k and. got first in my age group, but never will again because my entire reason for running far is to get away from humans, not to run with them. Anyway, thats my why. to be alone where I feel safe...the longer I go unseen by humans the better and happier I feel 🥰

for me it’s to self-regulate and burn off agitation and feeling of overwhelm; being on my own while running and all the good stuff my body is doing makes me calmer and makes me feel great after. And yes, I can still do things.

Definitely a way to take back control. If you've suffered trauma through abuse for example, which you've had no control over, sports can give that back to you.

I get it. I’m not really into endurance running so to speak but when my mom passed last year I started running and lifting 10-12 hours a week at 52 years old. It’s my way of coping with the grief maybe, I don’t know.

I tragically lost my first adult dog when he was 5 years old in my arms in April. I started running about a month ago. Running has helped me so much
