@allie_voss: No one is comfortable, just having a hobby anymore that they don’t monetize, and it’s the reason that farmers markets and crafts fairs end up with so many 3-D printed dragons, resin pyramids, and clay earrings. We’ve given up the pursuit of art for its own sake because everyone feels like their hobbies only count if they’re professionally done for profit.

This took me 4 months. I'm getting buried with it.

people want handcrafted products but they don't want to pay handcrafted prices. People are just too anchored to what an item should cost based mass produced prices.

I love baking and I’m a great baker. My friends and family tell me all the time I should sell my bread and I flat out tell them no. As soon as I start selling it, it’s no longer for the enjoyment of sharing my food with other people and it loses all appeal to me

Not to mention… Hobbies take TIME. To make good handmade goods takes a lot of time, and the American public isn’t used to paying what labor and materials actually cost.

my hobby is woodworking, everyone says I need to sell my stuff on Etsy or FB. I refuse because if I start doing it for money it's no longer a hobby.

The culture of work has completely eradicated any and all things external to production. Even leisure is now just a complement to work to make you more efficient

I am a hobbiest through and through and every time I show people a new hobby they say to me “you could sell that”. Okay but I don’t want to!

I’m a face painter and LOVE doing farmers markets. I was denied because I’m a service yet the farmers market had 3-3D prints, 2 AI tumbler/shirts, and multiple jewelry booths. Do the organizers not realize having booths like face painting also bring in more families because it’s more kid-friendly? 🙄

This was well said. There’s a lot of unwarranted pressure on people to be “productive” in everything they do

I feel like the monetization is half of if, and the other half is how afraid of judgment people are. They don’t want to bring or show off anything less than professional grade. They see the “perfect” version in stores and know theirs isn’t exactly like that so won’t even bother trying or if they do try won’t bother showing it all that publicly.

I've had people try to pay me to crochet stuff for them and I'm like nope it's my hobby not a job. I don't want my hobby to be some timline paid job. That takes the "fun/ doing it to relax" away.

I also feel like the lack of community makes it need to be a business instead of a sharing activity

this and if you do monetize your hobby, (ie knitting and crochet) people complain about the price even though the labor and materials are expensive. Further, why would you want to sell something for 20 bucks that you spent 6 hours on.

Currently crocheting blind boxes for my daughter’s volleyball team. They come with the card and in a little bag they tear open etc (tried hard to recreate the exact labubu experience but with their tiger. It’s all for free, I just want each time one of the young women unlock a new skill or get player of the game, or first time getting a point etc, they have a blind box. The amount of people that the say ‘well you should….” No! I want to give them away to show them that they are seen and their hard work is noticed. It’s a hobby of mine.

i feel like this also happened with people who learned to do nail art/gelx outside of cosmetology school, i went to an amateur once (she told me she taught herself during covid) and i guess she must have been retouching her posted work cause i was extremely underwhelmed with her skill

Our farmers market is like 1/3 produce, 1/3 food vendor (like prepared food), and 1/3 crafts. Thankfully, they limit the crafts to mostly handmade stuff.

There is a deeper downstream than just this. Everybody "feels" like they have to sell their hobbies is an insufficient conclusion. WHY does everybody feel this way.
