@josbokhoven: RED FLAGS 🚩🚩🚩 1. “we’re really easygoing.” in my experience, this SOMETIMES translates to “we don’t have routines, expectations change daily, and we’ll figure it out as we go.” flexibility is great, but kids thrive on consistency and so do working relationships. 2. expecting me to do everything during nap time. nap time doesn’t mean i suddenly become a housekeeper, chef, assistant, and organizer. it’s often the only chance to clean up from the morning, prep for the afternoon, take a breath, and reset. 3. making me feel guilty for using my benefits. if i have guaranteed hours, PTO, sick days, or overtime pay written into my contract, using them shouldn’t come with passive-aggressive comments or guilt trips. benefits aren’t favors, they’re part of the job. nannies… what red flag made you realize a family wasn’t the right fit? 👀🚩 #nanny #nannylife #controversial #parenting #redflags

I only nannied for one family and on my 40th all 3 boys who were now in their 20s showed up to my birthday party in matching bowties and my heart exploded.

I interviewed with a family that did free range parenting. I couldn’t run fast enough! They wanted no schedule no rules and let the 4 month old lead. Excuse me?

I’m easy going in the “idc what yall do, make slime, go to the park, paint on the windows, your job is to have fun with my tiny humans, not clean up after the adults, if you had a busy day and their room is trashed, so be it, I can clean it when I get home, just make them giggle and smile and send me pictures of your fun moments together 🥹”

Everyday With Meg :
The hardest thing I have with hiring a nanny is them not doing anything while babies nap. I am still paying them to be here, so I think they should stay busy. Granted, I do want them to take a couple short breaks, but they should generally stay busy. I have the hardest time communicating this! I don’t expect a lot, but when I come upstairs from working and they’re sitting on their phone every time, I get a little irritated.

The best family I ever worked for had a full time chef and housekeeper and also a personal assistant to help the parents with all their errands and odd tasks. I TRULY was there for child development and rearing and it was such a wonderful job.

I stopped nannying after the last family. They told their 5 & 7 year old that I work for them and therefore have to do what they say. They were also late and/or short on every payment.

I totally get most of this and I will say it is normal to expect the Nanny or Babysitter kids are napping to pick up the house. Do the dishes and help with laundry instead of sit on their phone. My family phase are really high rate for a babysitter so I taken care of, but I do expect because of that. Fury stepped up other ways. There is not childcare to do, however, childcare always takes priority. If the kids have a hard day or they don’t nap or it’s just super busy and they don’t go down for bed. Do not expect the house to be done.

Biggest red flag is when the dad and mom have different expectations and aren’t on the same page.

Ugh yes the naptime expectation is wild…I always told our nanny, if I wouldn’t do it then why do I expect you too! I had a solid rule that naptime is rest time. Eat your lunch, watch tv, take your own nap…I will never understand why families think it’s okay to overwork the people caring for their kids…

I agree with all of this. As a mom, I want my baby’s nanny to have a moment to breathe and reset because then she is better around my child. I know I need one, so why can’t she have one?

I only Nannied for a very short time when I was young, for a little boy, he is now a fully grown man, married with a kid of his own, he still keeps in touch and has his Pokémon pictures we drew together (blastoise), I adore him and still feel a sense of care towards him

I interviewed with a family once that asked me not to wear perfume. Which would have been fine if there was an allergy reason, but there wasn’t. I could just tell it was going to be a very controlling environment

I nannied for the same family for seven years. When I started, they were newborn and two years old. Two girls. I absolutely napped when they nap. And I watched TV. We were a family, and I was blessed with the best parents ever. They recognized and loved my role in their children’s life. It’s been 20 years and we’re still in contact. We love each other so much. They were in my wedding

We have a babysitter who comes only twice a week sometimes 3. We pay her even when we don’t need her or we cancel. Along with if we go on vacation, I still pay her. She does stuff around my house to make my life easier. Never expected but so appreciated. And my kids love her. I can’t understand how families who have a great nanny or babysitter can treat them so poorly. Blows my mind. And one who suffers the most is the child.

The last family I nannied for, I nannied so hard the youngest is my godson and he and his twin walked my mom down the aisle at my wedding. I just drove 12 hours round trip to the oldest’s college graduation, and I’ve been the main/head cook at their (and now my) family’s Thanksgiving (that their grandparents host) for almost 10 years. We also did a special extra parent dance at my wedding with the grandparents, who have become like my parents. 🥰
