@dr.chantelle.jess: Race is so messy and no category is ever complete. It’s a system which requires SOME terminology to better recognise the specific ways that some people are racialised. #mixedrace #race #biracial #mixedheritage #racism

Mixed is just mixed not black mixed raced. Black mixed raced would be Beyoncé or darker

I don’t identify with anyone… See I went to therapy found I had identity issues but then realised the above… It’s not that I’m confused by lack of identity… it’s that I don’t Identify myself in anything or anyone around me… I’m over the racially charged conversations about identity I understand the whys and I get the conflict… However I identify as a whole person… living an existence with purpose… without the need to explain myself especially on my skin phenotypes or heritage… It’s a personal experience people talk too much…

I *really* appreciate this. I'd never heard Black Mixed Race prior to seeing your videos but hearing it felt like, I dunno, like the perfect terminology for myself and my own experiences.

I typically say “Biracial Black” but I could get down with “Black Mixed Race”. I love that.

I’m new and adore your content. Have you made anything analysing black mixed race women’s experience with race/whiteness/ identity, please?

I appreciate your analysis and it’s important to those young people that share heritage with you. The topic of identity is so crucial to where one sits comfortably in society. Well done Dr

I understand as I’m South Asian mixed race 50/50. I’m interested in all mixed race but the algorithm tends to send me a lot more of black and black mixed race

it's what you identify with and what you feel more strongly as. no one can tell you what you are, no one should, you decide.

There are many of us out here who are mixed and we all individually have different perspectives on how we choose to define ourselves. Ultimately and more importantly is the fact that we are beautiful people and we are GOD'S children. Stay strong Miss Lewis and thank you for your message ✊🏿

Thank you Chantelle, this makes perfect sense to me as a mixed race person myself, my children have two mixed race parents which is generally unusual, so this terminology is very important for ppl to hear as mixed race doesn’t just stop at having a black-and-white parent. ❤️🙏

Totally agree with everything you say. Also, in my experience when I use mixed race to talk about my children, people presume I mean black mixed race. Making the distinction is important because, as you say, the black experience is different.

I also like to say black mixed race! Depends on context and relevance of the conversation. For a lot of the points you made. Like south asian mixed with white have a different experience, while similarities but they have their specific issues based on bias’s specifically for them.

Totally understand the term and the reason you use it. My family are from the Caribbean but we are Indo-Caribbean. All of my nieces and nephews are mixed, and my gf is white so when I eventually have children they will also be mixed. You mention “black mixed” as including people from the Caribbean but that doesn’t work in our situation (but my family had very similar experiences as the Afro-Caribbean people who came to the UK at the same time as my family did). Black mixed makes sense, but I don’t think it captures the experiences of the person like it sounds it should…
