I feel like we forget that the gems don’t really think like humans. They are aliens who CHANGED because of earth and human life. Their emotional comprehension and intelligence is learned throughout the series. That’s the point of the conflict, they aren’t born with empathy! They learn it! Rose was still learning from humans & she shared that with her friends. Steven was the connection to realizing what pink wanted.

Rose didn’t leave everything for Steven. She thought the world was calm and Steven was able to live as a human, to live a life that she wished she had (which is why she wanted to give up her form, so she can be half of Steven and experience life as a human). It was pure coincidence that Rose’s buried secrets were dug out after she was gone.
