@moments.in.time0: POV: You Are Rich in Tudor London... But Henry VIII Could Destroy You Tomorrow (1536) In 1536, being rich in London meant living close to power, fashion, danger, and scandal. This was Henry VIII’s England. The king had broken with Rome, Anne Boleyn had been executed in May, and the first monasteries were being dissolved. Land, money, and influence were changing hands fast. For the wealthy, London could be a place of opportunity: fine wool gowns, imported wine, spices, silver cups, servants, private chambers, and access to lawyers, merchants, courtiers, and royal officials. But status had rules. Clothing showed your rank immediately. Velvet, silk, fur, gold thread, and certain colors were controlled by sumptuary laws, because Tudor society wanted everyone to look like the class they belonged to. A rich household was also a public performance: servants, tableware, food, horses, and guests all told people how important you were. Outside the door, the city was crowded, noisy, smoky, and tense. The Thames carried goods, waste, and rumors. Markets were packed. Churches still shaped daily life, even as religion itself was being torn apart from the top down. To be rich in Tudor London was to eat better, dress better, and sleep safer than most people around you, but it also meant living under a king whose favor could make or destroy a family overnight. #History #tudorhistory #londonhistory #tudorlondon #henryviii
