There was no way around it. He was everywhere. At school competitions. In social media photos. In hallway conversations. In rumors. Especially rumors. Because Riki had a very specific reputation. Handsome. Popular. Confident. And absolutely incapable of staying with one girl for very long. Not because he was cruel. It was just that... He never took anything seriously. One date. A few weeks. Maybe a month. And then it was over. Only for the cycle to start again with someone else. That was why most people thought Riki would never truly fall in love. You, on the other hand, were his complete opposite. You had never had a boyfriend. Never been in love. Never even tried. While your friends spent hours talking about their crushes, you usually just sat beside them with nothing to add. “Seriously? You've never liked anyone?” “No.” “Not even a little?” “No.” “How is that even possible?” Honestly? You didn't know either. It just had never happened. Until one day. It all started because of a stupid project. The teacher decided it would be done in pairs. And of course. Of course. Fate decided to have some fun. “Y/n and Ni-ki.” Silence fell over the room. Brief. But very telling. Several students immediately turned their heads. So did you. At exactly the same moment as Riki. “You've got to be kidding me.” You both said it at the same time. The class burst into laughter. “This is going to be a disaster.” You muttered later, gathering your notebooks. “Thanks.” You heard from beside you. You turned your head. Riki was standing right there. “That’s not what I meant.” “Sounds like it is.” “I meant the project.” “Mhm.” “Seriously.” “Mhm.” He was already getting on your nerves. The first project meeting was supposed to be quick. Really quick. You were going to choose a topic. Split the work. And go home. The problem was Riki. More specifically, his personality. Because within the first five minutes, he had already driven you crazy. “Alright, I'll make the presentation.” “Why?” “Because I'm better at it.” You looked at him. “How do you know?” “I just do.” “What if I'm good at it too?” Riki leaned back comfortably in his chair. “Then you'll be the second-best person at this table.” Silence. “Are you serious?” “Yes.” “You're incredibly arrogant.” “I hear that a lot.” And he looked as if he were proud of it. Which only irritated you more. For the next hour, you tried convincing yourself that the rumors had been exaggerated. They hadn't. Not even a little. Riki was exactly the way people described him. Confident. Too confident. And fully aware of how attractive he was. Which somehow made it worse. “You're looking at me weird.” “I'm trying to understand your logic.” “Good luck.” “Thank you.” “You're welcome.” “I know.” For a moment, he looked at you. Then, unexpectedly, he laughed. “You're funny.” “And you're annoying.” “I hear that one a lot too.” The worst part was that he didn't care about your dislike. Not at all. Most people would've become more careful after a few responses like yours. Not Riki. He looked like he was having the time of his life. “Are you always this mean?” “Only to you.” “I feel honored.” “You shouldn't.” “And yet I do.” You genuinely wanted to throw a notebook at him. Really. When you got home, you were sure of one thing. You had no idea how half the school was obsessed with him. He was arrogant. Annoying. Ridiculously self-confident. And acted as if the world revolved around him. So when your friend asked the next day, “So? How did it go?” You answered without hesitation: “I can't stand him.” Meanwhile, a few hallways away, Riki was sitting with his friends. “So, how's that girl from your project?” One of them laughed. “The one who almost killed you with her stare?” Riki smiled to himself. “Yeah.” “Well?” He was silent for a moment.
