If I tell you not to think about a pink elephant, what happens? Odds are you’d immediately think about a pink elephant. Why does this matter? Attention doesn’t work through suppression. It works through direction. The same thing happens in the gym: It’s rare that I see people go to the gym without their phones or their tripods. Today, staying focused on your workout is of secondary nature to most. Just look at the people around you at the gym and you’ll notice the scrolling, the recording/looking for perfect angles and lighting… A great way to improve performance is to stay focused on the present moment through attention anchors. Because attention skills are trainable! Which means that we can improve our ability to focus, which will undoubtedly improve our performance at the gym. This is where mantras become powerful. But a mantra isn’t motivation, positive thinking or any of the crap you see online. A mantra is an attentional anchor! Research on meditation and sports psychology shows that repeating a word, phrase, or cue can reduce mind wandering, improve attentional control, and help redirect focus toward the task at hand. The mind receives a simple instruction and immediately shifts the focus. Interestingly, brain imaging studies on mantra meditation show reduced activity in regions associated with self-referential thinking and mind wandering. In simple terms, less internal noise and more engagement with what is happening right now. That sounds remarkably similar to what athletes describe when they’re completely locked into a performance…those who truly want to achieve their peak need to understand the importance of the psychology behind elite performers. The best training sessions often feel less like exercise and more like meditation under load. Sources: • Simon R. et al. (2017). Mantra Meditation Suppression of Default Mode Beyond an Active Task.
