Also to add that something established in season 1 is that Frank loves his kids and dogs. Mel’s also shown to not only be great with dogs and kids in season 1, but also likes them. So season 1 shows us they match in lifestyle, and season 2 shows us they have mutual interests they don’t even know they have yet!!
