@ukcitizen2002: this will pollute Scottish water, raise energy prices, be a blight on the landscape, and produce loads of dirty air - As a computer science grad with a First-Class Honours degree working in tech, I’m telling you this AI boom is a massive dot-com style bubble. The foundational tech is old, it has hit an operational ceiling, and it constantly lies and makes errors that require humans to fix. It is not the endless money-maker or future tech they are selling you.
These mega data centers are being pushed for a quick, risky buck, but they won't even bring jobs. They are heavily automated, and most tech professionals work remotely anyway. On top of that, big tech giants are notoriously famous for dodging their taxes, meaning Scotland sacrifices its landscape while corporate profits just head offshore.
We are literally gutting our ancient lands, ruining nature, and pushing our national grid to the absolute brink for a tech hype that's bound to crash. If these ugly buildings absolutely must be built, they should strictly be restricted to underutilized industrial brownfield sites only. Zero greenfield development.
We need to force their hands: mandate that these centers wrap their exterior walls in living plants and vertical gardens to protect biodiversity. Plus, every single square meter of roofing must be covered in solar panels to feed power back into the grid to support local communities, not drain them. Don't gut our home for a lie!
